ColdFusion Open Source List Redesign

Posted on Oct 15, 2006

I was finally able to resolve the issues I discussed in my last post as well as a number of things I apparently managed to overlook and launched a revision to the ColdFusion open-source list. Actually, while the public facing portion has a slightly reqorked interface, under the covers this was a complete rewrite. The new list is built with Mach II, ColdSpring and Transfer ORM. I hope to do a thorough post on how easy it was to integrate those technologies, but for now, please send me any comments on the new layout and I am always happy to hear feature requests (especially now that the architecture will make this easier to extend and maintain).

Generate Your Transfer ORM Templates

Posted on Oct 14, 2006

I did some work recently (and recently committed) an early draft of some templates for my Illudium PU-36 Code Generator that will generate components for use with Mark Mandel's Transfer ORM. These are still in the early stages somewhat, but the templates would include an XML snippet for the Transfer config (this is the part that needs some additional tweaking on data types I believe), a service component with methods that call the proper Transfer generated methods, and the ColdSpring snippet to inject Transfer into your service. It also still includes a gateway mostly out of personal preference. Transfer will handle some of your gateway type calls as well, but in the end (for the moment) I prefer to write my own SQL for this since 1) I don't hate writing SQL; 2) I think generated gateway methods are usually not flexible enough...at least in my experience so far. Anyway, if you want to check out the templates, you can pull the latest commit from Subversion and it will be in the /xsl/project/transfer folder. To use this, copy and rename the folder with the same name as your datasource, and the generator will use that set of templates instead automatically. (and remember these are still in the works...so send any issues or improvement suggestions along)

Peter Bell will be in Boston to speak this Wednesday, October 11, at 6:30 to the Boston ColdFusion User Group. Goodbye Star Wars...Hello Annuities!

Posted on Oct 04, 2006

As of next week I will be bidding farewell to Darth Vader, Optimus Prime, Mr. Potato Head and a great group of developers at Hasbro. It is time to move on to more exciting topics like life insurance, annuities and mutual funds! Despite my kidding, I am actually very excited to announce that I have accepted a position as an applications developer with Sun Life Financial. The primary driver behind the move is that Sun Life is about 40 miles closer to my home (yes, each way), but I am also very excited by the position which will, I believe, allow me to continue to grow as a ColdFusion developer while adding in some Flex and Java skills.

Also let me give a plug to CFUGs (and the Boston CFUG which I run), because it was through the CFUG that I met and got to know some of the developers at Sun Life and, thereby, got this opportunity.

Lastly, as I say goodbye to Hasbro, I want to say thanks to the company, but especially the web development team. It has been a lot of fun - and I know it is difficult putting up with someone as perpetually bright, shiny and optimistic as I am. Now, let's count the days until I become "someone" ;)

P.S. If anyone is looking for a ColdFusion position in Rhode Island, keep your eyes open for the job listing.
