Music for Your Work Week - Shiny Toy Guns
Posted on Apr 25, 2006
So, if you are like me, you get most of your music listening in while coding. As I mentioned in my ColdFusion Weekly podcast interview, I buy way too much music...yes, its true that I have a few interests outside of coding, and I figure this blog should occasionally represent that fact. Therefore, this week will begin the first of weekly itunes picks (and Tuesday being release day, it seems appropriate). My first pick is Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots, which, while not a new release (2005), has been wearing out my ipod since I purchased it last month.
Shiny Toy Guns music is a retro indie-dance or rocktronica along the lines of Out Hud or Ladytron. I describe them as the best 80's band that never existed (at least not in the 80s)...which, if that sounds to you like the compliment I intend it to be, then I recommend you check them out. I especially recommend the songs "We Are Pilots" and "When They Came For Us". Feel free to share if you enjoy the choice!
Adding Open-Source LylaCaptcha to BlogCFC
Posted on Apr 24, 2006
Are you tired of comment spam? Well, I am not...I love it (cue Police Squad). Well, fortunately Peter Farrell recently released LylaCaptcha, an highly configurable and high-quality open-source captcha solution. Also fortunately, adding LylaCaptcha to Ray Camden's BlogCFC is also easy...here's how.
Image Uploading in Model-Glue
Posted on Apr 21, 2006
Recently, I started using Model-Glue and even went as far as to unilaterally adopt it for a project I am working on at my job. So far the experience has been a positive one. One question that seems to come up frequently for Model-Glue newbies is how to handle image uploading in a form, and I wanted to cover how I chose to handle that. First, I want to thank Raymond Camden for his series, and Peter Farrell and Peter Bell for talking (IM-ing actually) me through some conceptual issues I was dealing with. Also, be gentle, I am very new to Model-Glue and OO, but I figured my experiences might help others who are also getting started (and feel free to correct me...I would love the feedback). That being said, back to the topic at hand.
Yes, You Can Run Reactor in a Shared Hosting Environment
Posted on Apr 16, 2006
On the Reactor and Model-Glue lists, someone has been passing along the totally erroneous assertion that Reactor does not work in shared hosting environments because, he asserts, of the need for a CF mapping. For the record, my Open-Source List runs entirely on Reactor. Oh and btw, I am running in a shared hosting environment (HostMySite). Oh and furthermore, I do not have a mapping called "reactor". I simply placed the Reactor folder in my site root and it worked perfectly. For those who use HostMySite, they append your siteid to any mappings you create, so my "data" folder (i.e. where Reactor puts the generated code) mapping needed the siteid appended (since it was not in the root), but this was one simple change in my xml config file. Now, I cannot speak of every shared hosting environment, and we all know they can vary wildly in quality, but I can confidently assert that Reactor does work in shared hosting environments. (and the people on the Reactor list are very helpful and generous with their time, so, for crying out loud, be polite and don't berate the people generously assisting you).
