Embedded Database Coming in Apollo Public Beta

Posted on May 31, 2007

There has been a lot of talk about Google Gears off-line web application platform today. One of the important items being that Gears will embed a SQLite database for off-line data storage. The lack of real off-line data storage was one of my chief criticisms of the Apollo platform. Well, there is good news on this front. Within Ryan Stewart's Gears post he says the following:

The other cool thing about this announcement is the information that the Apollo team has been simultaneously working on an embedded database in Apollo. The embedded database will be a part of the public beta for Apollo that is coming soon.

I suppose if there is offline data storage then synching data on and off line should be entirely feasible too. Now that, in my opinion, would be the key to making really powerful, Flex-driven off-line applications.

I Am Quoted in the CF8 Press Release

Posted on May 30, 2007

You may not have heard yet that the public beta of ColdFusion 8 was released (uh...yeah right). However, you likely missed the big story there, and that is that yours personally was directly quoted in the press release in paragraph two:

Customers of all sizes have actively participated in the ColdFusion public beta and found the solution offers many compelling reasons to upgrade. "ColdFusion 8 delivers several enhancements that boost day-to-day productivity," said Brian Rinaldi, ColdFusion Developer, Distributed Computing Group, Sun Life Financial. "Features such as debugging and server monitoring accelerate routine development and maintenance—and can really make a difference when it comes to keeping service levels high and applications running smoothly."

Obviously, now that ColdFusion 8 has my official endorsement, any reservations you may have had have vanished. Anyway, what the heck did you have reservations about? Didn't you hear about all the new features (pdf)?

Update: eWeek picked up the quote and included it in their article too (last paragraph). Apparently I released a statement ;)

Update: Ok forgive me for having a little fun with this, but the quotes ended up in the following articles so far:

Remote Synthesis Declares ComputerWorld Dead!

Posted on May 25, 2007

5. This once-popular computer journal -- released in the mid-1960s by International Data Group Inc. (which also publishes the equally irrelevant CIO and InfoWorld) -- has since been superseded by other journals, including PC Magazine, Wired and eWeek as well as sites such as TechCrunch, Slashdot, Digg and other well known aggregators like Techmeme.

Debates continue over whether ComputerWorld is as well-researched and relevant as its competitors, but nevertheless, paid subscriptions for the print journal have [probably] dropped way off, according to Rinaldi. "It was really popular at one time, but the market is now crowded with other, better journals," he says.

Having been through this argument so many times before, I figured I would have a little fun with it this time

ColdFusion Open-Source Update - May 21

Posted on May 21, 2007

Six new releases and five updates this week. I hereby dub this week of the generator with Tony Petruzzi, Brian Kotek and myself all having various code generator related releases this week. On a more important note, the Open Source List (from whence this all began) has crossed the 200 project mark making it the single biggest and most influential list of things open source and ColdFusion in the universe (when you exclude other lists that might be bigger and/or more influential). Enjoy!
