ColdFusion Open-Source Update - August 20

Posted on Aug 20, 2007

Five new projects and two updates this week (and like 1,000 tutorial and presentation posts). Here I am in New Hampshire on vacation with the family and yet I am posting my weekly updates. Thus is my devotion to the ColdFusion community that not StoryLand nor Mt. Washington can stand in its way.

The ColdFusion and Tech Blogs I Follow

Posted on Aug 16, 2007

This morning Todd Sharp started a conversation on a mailing list I subscribe to about adding and updating blogrolls. I have actually never had a blogroll and don't really intend to (my real estate is cramped as is). However, shortly thereafter a friend asked me what blogs he should subscribe to in the ColdFusion community. This got me thinking, maybe this information would be worthwhile to others. So, along these lines, rather than create a blogroll, I am attaching my Bloglines OPML export.

The attached OPML includes every ColdFusion blog I currently subscribe to (there are *a lot*), a handful of Flex blogs, some Adobe specific blogs, and several blogs I follow just to keep up with the industry in general (like TechCrunch and WebbAlert). You can export it into Bloglines or any other RSS reader that supports OPML.

Now, if you have a CF blog and you are not on there, please don't take offense. If you are on MXNA or FullAsAGoog I follow those independently. I actually started using Bloglines because a number of sites were blocked by the firewall at work - so occasionally I find one I follow regularly that isn't on my subscribe list because I catch it on MXNA and it was never blocked. Also, many of the blogs I subscribe to have some relation to open-source and I subscribe specifically to make sure I catch all the posts for my weekly updates.

Anyway, that's enough hedging for one post :) Hope some of you find this useful.

Another Google Should Buy Adobe Article - GigaOm

Posted on Aug 14, 2007

Can I be completely honest here? I started following GigaOm because I know a lot of people respect the writing they do, and Om Malik specifically. However, I have to say that recently I have found they are posting occasional garbage designed purely to get pageviews IMO - such as their series of posts on why the Xbox 360 is dead. The latest of these throwaway posts is "Google: Buy Adobe for Video!" which posits that Google should purchase Adobe simply to get its hands on Flash Video.

ColdFusion 8 - Passing Common Attributes Via AttributesCollection

Posted on Aug 14, 2007

We have all heard how the new AttributeCollection attribute that exists on most ColdFusion tags in ColdFusion 8 can prevent having to write multiple CFMail tags to handle situations where the attributes may vary (say, one with CC and one without). However, I was actually doing some sample code for cffeed and cfpresentation when I came up with another potential usage.

Where I work everything needs to be accessed via the proxy. Thus, every tag like cfhttp or cffeed needs to pass my proxy URL with port, username and password. Well, since the attributeCollection is simply a structure, we can actually create a common proxy structure and append this as needed, with one annoying caveat. Let's take a look.

(On a side note, I had an issue with cffeed and proxies - see the end of this post if you are curious)

Music for Your Work Week - Asobi Seksu

Posted on Aug 14, 2007

After a long hiatus, I have decided to bring back my "Music for Your Work Week" series. They weren't the most widely read posts, but as a music fan, I like writing them. Plus, I download so many albums, perhaps someone will be interested in my occassional "finds."

This week's pick is an album I downloaded from Emusic several months ago, but am always surprised and impressed whenever I listen to it. Citrus by Asobi Seksu (apparently Japanese for "playful sex") is a wonderful and generally upbeat mixture of alternative rock/pop that is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine with more than a dash of the Primitives thrown in.
