ColdFusion Open-Source Update - March 30, 2008

Posted on Mar 31, 2008

While there is only one new release and one update this week, there were some potentially very significant announcements this week. First, Six Signs has announced plans, driven in part by the recent New Atlanta announcement, to open-source their asset management and CMS tool. Second, I leaked some details on new wiki software being released by Luis Majano and Mark Mandel. Third, Peter Farrell discusses the future of Mach-II and some important new features that will be coming. Lastly, Geoff Bowers discusses the fallout of FarCry's application to be included in the Google Summer of Code. All must reads in my opinion and leading to a busy week after all, if not in actual releases.

Transfer 1.0 Secrets Revealed!

Posted on Mar 27, 2008

vegemiteIt appears that things have been busy down under in between vegemite sandwiches. Through a super-secret source who chooses not to be identified but goes by the handle "neurotic", I have discovered some interesting information regarding the imminent release of Transfer 1.0 and a possible new ColdFusion open-source wiki based on Transfer and ColdBox. The information is at the yet-to-be-announced Transfer documentation site. While many of the pages don't yet appear to be written, I expect that to change soon. In particular I am hoping to find a sneak peak of the Transfer 1.0 release notes.

More interestingly, given the lack of specifics in regards to 1.0, is that the site appears to run on a new ColdFusion wiki software called CodexWiki. I have inferred that it is written in ColdBox and Transfer because of the "powered by ColdBox" logo in the lower-left of the page and the stunningly beautiful powered by transfer"powered by Transfer" box on the lower-right corner of the page. I know you must indeed be impressed by my powers of deduction, but my source has confirmed that this is true and that the software will be released as open-source, which in layman's terms means the "source" will be "open" (and not they have given up on the product).

Looking for me at cf.Objective()? Here's My Schedule.

Posted on Mar 26, 2008

As I have done for previous conferences, I am sharing my session schedule for this year's cf.Objective() conference which is coming up quickly - May 1-4 (conference schedule PDF attached). Yes, I am attending my own session and you should too! ;) I am very excited about this year's conference, not just because I am presenting but because I have enjoyed this conference both prior years and this year looks to be better.

For example, you will notice that there are more speakers and more sessions than even last year. I am particularly happy to see the RIA track, of which I am a part, because I think it is obvious at this point that RIA's in Flex/AIR and Ajax are going to play such a key role in almost any ColdFusion developer's future. Kudos to Sean Corfield who has led the speaker and session selection.

Any readers of mine who are attending, please feel free to come say hello. Also, if you are interested in Flex and Cairngorm, attend my session on Cairngorm for ColdFusion Developers. I hope to do a good job of distilling Cairngorm into a simple process. However, more importantly, my presentation has a Duck Dodgers in the 24th 1/2 Century theme. How do I relate Duck Dodgers and Cairngorm? You'll have to attend to find out!

CFUnited Interview - Peter Bell

Posted on Mar 25, 2008

In this month's installment of my CFUnited interview series, I speak to prominent ColdFusion blogger, author and presenter and good friend, Peter Bell. Peter is well known for his innovative and often controversial ideas about code generation and design patterns. Peter also runs his own business, SystemsForge, based in New York City. Having just returned from a whirlwind series of trips around the world where he both attended and presented at various conferences and, after weeks of harassment from me, Peter has agreed to speak with me.
