ColdFusion Open-Source Update - August 11, 2008
Posted on Aug 11, 2008
Four new projects and six updates this week. I am struggling with a dead 3 month old MacBook Pro today, which is why this post is happening so late. Basically, my MB Pro would crash regularly and this morning it crashed and wouldn't turn back on. Thankfully my local authorized repair shop got a seven day repair done in a day - well, not quite done but my laptop is working or, as I like to consider it, undead. This coming Monday Gert Franz, CEO of Railo, will be presenting Railo to the Boston CFUG (for meeting details go here). As many of you already know, Railo announced that they were partnering with JBoss and going completely open-source (LGPL2). You can see the full announcement on Sacha’s Weblog. As part of this arrangement, Railo and the JBoss community will be working on integrating other JBoss services such as JBoss Cache, Hibernate and JBoss Messaging. Gert and Railo are also working with Adobe, for instance as part of the CMFL Advisory Committee and you can see Ben Forta's thoughts on the Railo announcment on his blog as well as Adam Lehman's take on his blog.
I think this is an exciting development for the ColdFusion community and could potentially help us expand the community by drawing Java developers to CFML for rapid web-based user-interfaces. It also gives CFML developers another open-source option with a less restrictive license, making it more palatable with larger organizations and allow it to be included in your distributions without changing your own license (or having to pay license fees).
The point is, if you live in or are visiting the Boston area on Monday, you should RSVP now!
ColdFusion Open-Source Update - August 4, 2008

Four new projects and five updates this week. I thought of starting a weekly "Who's Joining BroadChoice" update but I don't know if I have the time to keep up. Apparently Joe is advocating they build everything with his POC of the CFGoto tag for improved performance! I think that is brilliant and can't wait for it to be in ColdFusion 9.
