Posted on Feb 22, 2010

Five new releases and five updates this week in ColdFusion open source. Hello, remember me? I am the ColdFusion open source update that has been lacking in your life the past couple weeks or more. Did you miss me? Well, I am here in Miami basking in the warmth but nonetheless I saved up some really good stuff this week including the impressive looking cfcommons project.

Headed to FOWA Miami

Posted on Feb 21, 2010

Tomorrow I will be headed to the Future of Web Apps (FOWA) conference in Miami. I am excited about this conference for a number of reasons. The first is that it is outside my typical Adobe ColdFusion and Flex sphere. This is a good thing in my mind because I need to both broaden my horizons and my network a bit. I hope to post more about this  topic but I've decided that this year being a good representative of the languages/servers I like to use is not just a matter of preaching to the choir but stepping outside my comfort zone to conferences such as this one. Hopefully there will be plenty more CF/Flex people there but I plan on both learning from people outside our community as well as being a good advocate for our community.

The second reason I am excited is simply because of the quality of the speakers, sessions and workshops. There are representatives from companies like Facebook, Twitter, Mint, PayPal, Microsoft, Mozilla and more speaking there. This is, I hope, a good chance to see what is going on in the "cutting edge" of web development and strategy. I am particularly excited about the workshop with John Resig as I hope to improve my jQuery knowledge.

You can look for coverage of whatever sessions I attend on this blog in the coming week. Also, if you are in Miami, at this conference, feel free to say hello.

Building AIR Applications with HTML, JavaScript and jQuery

Posted on Feb 19, 2010

I recently wrote an article for the February edition of the Adobe Edge newsletter. This is a beginning tutorial covering creating desktop applications in Adobe AIR using HTML, JavaScript and jQuery. I focused on using tools built into Dreamweaver for this although I realize most of the readers of this blog probably use Eclipse-based tools. The audience for this article is intended to be front-end developers who already have HTML and JavaScript skills but with less emphasis on back-end coding (i.e. no ColdFusion in this one - rather I use existing API's). In this audience, I would think Dreamweaver is the dominant tool as opposed to Apatana, so I stuck with what would be comfortable for that group.

If you are looking for a introductory tutorial for building JavaScript-based AIR apps, please check out the article. It also includes some discussion of using the New York Times movie API as a means of highlighting that the Times makes a number of fantastic API's available for free. You can find the article here.

Posted on Feb 18, 2010

Ryan Stewart posted yesterday that Adobe is sponsoring an evening Flash Camp here in Boston (well, Cambridge to be exact) at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square. on March 19 They are flying in several members of the Flash Builder and Flex teams including Deepa, the new Product Manager for Flex. In addition, for ColdFusion folks like myself, there will be a session on ColdFusion Builder. Something tells me we can expect some exciting announcements a this event! Plus, there will be beer...and, if that weren't enough, there will be beer too! Oh, and prizes, but did I mention free beer?

This sounds like its going to be a great event and given that its complete free (as in beer!), I expect it will sell out soon. So, grab your tickets ASAP. Here's some basic details from Ryan's site:

When: Friday, March 19th, 2010. 5:00 p.m. EST – 10:30 p.m. EST

ColdFusion Open-Source Update - February 10, 2010

Posted on Feb 10, 2010

Four new projects and three updated ones in ColdFusion open source this week. It's a snow day here in Boston. The kids are home from school and I am working from home. The only missing element so far is actual snow. There have been some sprinkles of snow ongoing but so far not even a milimeter of accumulation. Nonetheless, this doesn't stop the local news from covering this like its the storm of the century. Anyway, here's this week's update.
