The Final CFUnited - Conference Review
Posted on Jul 31, 2010
This year’s CFUnited was unique in so many ways for me. Much of the conference was the same as last year: the venue at the Landsdown Resort, which offers great amenities (the gym and pools are fabulous) and good food; the speakers, most of whom were CFUnited regulars, were excellent; and the networking was incredible. Part of what made this year unique, however, was the fact that it was the final one.

Five new projects and two updates in ColdFusion open source this week. CFUnited, which begins tonight, completes what has been a crazy month for me and seen me criss-crossing the country for various trips. Nonetheless, this should be both fun and exciting and I expect many announcements to come (I personally recall Liz Frederick, Adam Lehman and Ray Camden have each hinted they have some announcements via Twitter). I, personally, have 2 sessions at CFUnited including an intro to Flex for CF developers and another about building ColdFusion Builder extensions. Anyway, for those of you who are attending, be sure to stop me and say hello.

Six new projects and seven updates in ColdFusion open source this week. Clearly this was a busy week. I think open source developers must have heard about my vacation next week and wanted to make sure I didn't forget about them whilst sunbathing in Miami or playing slots in Vegas. Perhaps it has more to do with the final CFUnited being right around the corner...nah, it's definitely about my vacation.

As part of this year's RIA Unleashed conference, I followed the suggestion that has been made by many past attendees and added on hands-on sessions to our schedule. This year RIA Unleashed is a 2-day event, with the first day dedicated to half-day, hands-on training sessions covering a variety of hot topics in the RIA development space including Flex 4 and Flash Builder 4, AIR 2.0, Flash and AIR for mobile (i.e. Android), ColdFusion ORM and much more (for a full list of sessions announced so far and the recently announced schedule for day 1, you can check the site). Each of the sessions is being run by a recognized leader in that specific technology area.
I am really excited about this day and already sign-ups have been exceeding my expectations! So much so, that I wanted to make sure I get the word out that, due to the constraints of running hand-on training, day one of RIA Unleashed has limited seating (I am targeting 100 attendees in total and definitely do not have capacity for more than 150 - compare that to the 350 person capacity crowd we had last year for the conference day). Anyway, my point is, if you are interested in attending the hands-on sessions, I would plan to purchase your ticket soon as I expect them to sell out well in advance of the event!

Posted on Jul 11, 2010
I am busily working on an article about developing AIR for Android following the instructions from this excellent video tutorial by Lee Brimelow. However, when I connected my Nexus One and ran the ./adb devices command from the Console, it returned me an empty list of items. It turned out to be a very simple problem. I simply needed to enable USB debugging on my device. This setting was found at Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging on my Android phone. It seems that by default this setting is turned off (which makes sense really since few people really need it). Once I turned this on, running ./adb devices returned the connected device and I could continue developing and publishing to the device.
