Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 9/29/10

Posted on Sep 28, 2010

This was a really busy week including announcements about the Blackberry tablet OS for the upcoming Blackberry Playbook and more details about the Galaxy Tab tablet from Samsung. In addition, we had more sneaks of Flash Builder “Burrito” from the Flash team and the release of a 64-bit Flash Player on Adobe Labs. There’s just so much cool stuff coming out its hard to keep track. Speaking of which, if you’re interested in all the latest Flash, Flex and mobile stuff, I run an event in Boston called RIA Unleashed which will have sessions and workshops on all of these topics. Here’s this week’s notable community posts.

Mobile Design That Doesn’t Suck - Paul Trani at FITC Mobile

Posted on Sep 23, 2010

My background is as a developer; not just a developer but a back-end developer. If there is any group of people who generally suck at design, it is back-end developers and I am no exception. This is probably why I found the presentation by my colleague at Adobe, Paul Trani, so enlightening. Paul is a great presenter and I definitelyI left the presentation feeling as though my future designs would suck less (notice, I didn’t say they wouldn’t suck...it’s good to have realistic expectations). Here are my notes and thoughts from his session (you can also grab his slides online).

Coldfusion Open Source Update - September 22, 2010

Posted on Sep 22, 2010

Six new projects and ten updates this week (plus) in ColdFusion open source. I just wanted to take a moment and remind my readers of the RIA Unleashed conference I am running in Boston this November. I have been fairly open to mailing lists and such that registrations are running well behind prior years and think it needs further emphasis. Events like these don't survive without your support (we in the ColdFusion community know this well) and especially those run at such a low cost to attendees. The East Coast of the US is particularly in jeopardy of being devoid of conferences for the Adobe developer community next year and definitely devoid of ColdFusion content. So, community, I ask you that if you want events like this to continue - you need to show up. Ok...end rant for the moment...sorry, just a little stressed, back to ColdFusion open source and the close to 40 posts in this week's update.

Brass Monkey SDK for Flash, Android, iOS - FITC Mobile Interview

Posted on Sep 21, 2010

Of all the cool things at FITC Mobile in Toronto this year, the presentation and product that had me the most impressed (and had my mind reeling with ideas for applications) was the Brass Monkey SDK which was presented by Chris Allen. Created by Infrared5, the company that brought you the Star Wars Trench Run game for the iPhone/iPod, Brass Monkey can turn any smart phone running iOS or Android into a motion and touch controller for controlling your Flash, Flex or Unity3D game online. You can multiple phones connected to the same game and all being able to interact with it using the multitouch and accelerometer inputs as well as custom events that can be passed.

Contribute to the ColdFusion Cookbook - Win Prizes & Gain Respect!

Posted on Sep 20, 2010

Sadly, the ColdFusion community has not been contributing much to the ColdFusion Cookbook. This is a shame since it is a great community resource for us all that can be especially useful for new people in the community. In order to get the recipes rolling in again, Ed Sullivan from the ADC team at Adobe just announced a new drive for contributions being run for the Adobe ColdFusion Cookbook. Firstly, every recipe you contribute will give you a free ADC t-shirt - meaning if you are especially productive you may never need to wear anything else ever again ;). If you contribute the most recipes within the contest period, you get an ADC branded Timbuk2 bag with additional goodies inside (these bags are awesome, I still use my Flex 2 branded bag). Finally, the best submission during the contest period (as voted on by some CF heavyweights) will receive a copy of ColdFusion 9 Standard. For all the details, please check out Ed's post.

Many of you out there likely have stuff to contribute sitting on your blog or elsewhere that it would be easy to repurpose and post. So, contribute, get free stuff, enter the contest and gain the respect of the ColdFusion community!
