Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 1/25/11
Posted on Jan 25, 2011
While there were some great posts this week, many portions of the Flash community seemed somewhat distracted by some comments, blog posts and Twitter posts surrounding the New Adventures in Web Design conference in Nottingham, England. This led to follow up posts and much heated discussion. Nonetheless, some very cool posts (not surrounding the debate) did come out this week including things like the camera kaleidoscope application for Android (with source code), a Google Analytics ActionScript 3 library, source code to help you start creating Flash games and a new version of the Flint Particle System (to name just a few).

This was a very busy week for Flash Platform posts from the community. For instance, the Flash/Kinect integration by BLITZ agency and the Flash front-end to the Watson supercomputer by IBM both received some mainstream tech media coverage. The non-Adobe community members covered in this post include Chris Griffith, Andrew Powell, Jake (from Hook), Christopher Caleb, Dan Florio, Norbert Kopcsek, David Deraedt, Andy Matthews, Noah Gedrich andYosef Flomin (of BLITZ), Ralph Hauwert, Keith Peters, Barbara Kaskosz, Doug Ensley, Dan Gries, Emanuele Feronato and Carlos Yanez.

Things were relatively quiet over the New Year's break, though we did get some good news out of CES last week including a ton of new devices supporting Flash. It seems there's only one company not supporting Flash on their devices but I forget the details. :) A lot of this week's posts come from internal Adobe sources but bloggers such as Christopher Caleb, Chris Griffith, The Bigger Design, Emanuele Feronato, Jake Rocheleau and Nate Beck all had great posts this week.

My latest article for the Adobe Edge is out. This article continues my ongoing series of articles covering AIR for Android and Flex Hero mobile development. In this edition, I cover some more advanced topics such as using the CameraUI and CameraRoll for images, storing data in SQLite, accessing the file API, persisting data across views and recording with the microphone. There is a sample application that I have released to go along with the article which you can use with the MAX build of Flash Builder Burrito. I have continued to develop the application and hope to release further iterations of this example as I can (as in, when NDA's permit). In fact, the screenshot is of a more recent version of the code that includes the ability to delete images and albums (and that's me in the picture with my 8 year old son at a Miami Heat game over the Christmas break).
