Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 5/24/11
Posted on May 24, 2011
Another busy week in the Flash Platform community. This week featured a number of authors who posted multiple tips and tutorials - some as many as six this week alone. I'm also excited to see that as things progress we're already seeing fewer and fewer mobile demos that are platform specific. Once the Flash Builder 4.5 update comes out I expect this will only accelerate which, hopefully, means that we're really getting close to the target of making code reusable across platforms, whether that is multiple devices or devices, desktop and the web.
Any of you that follow these weekly posts know that game development using the Flash Platform has been a hot topic this year, with more and more developers jumping in due to the availability of Flash on mobile and devices. In order to further assist and encourage those developers the ADC has launched a Flash Platform Game Developer Center that contains a long list of resources for either novice or advanced game developers on the Flash Platform.

This week was exceptionally busy (which, combined with my travel last week to San Jose, explains the delay in getting this finished) including well over thirty community articles, samples or tutorials covering the array of Flash Platform products. This week featured an especially high number of mobile examples for using Flex 4.5 and Flash Builder 4.5 with most seeming to focus on either cross-platform solutions or Android specifically.
Among the official announcements this week, Adobe's Emmy Huang posted about Flash Player 10.3 availability for desktop and Android devices including Android 3.1 support. Some of the new features are media measurement and acoustic echo cancellation on desktop as well as enhanced privacy and security improvements. In addition, Adobe's Thibault Imbert posts details of the new Flash Player Incubator release.

Between FITC in Toronto last week and the official release of Flash Builder 4.5, Flex 4.5 SDK and Flash Catalyst CS5.5, this was unsurprisingly an incredibly busy week of great content. You can start with Deepa Subramaniam announcing the availability of Flex 4.5 SDK, Flash Builder 4.5 and Flash Catalyst CS 5.5 on the Flex Team blog, which includes lots of links to getting started material on the ADC but be sure to check out the many superb tutorials and demos from the community as well (there are over 30 listed below).

One of my favorite aspects of doign mobile development using Flash Builder 4.5 is that in most cases it gracefully handles some of the more annoyingly complicated aspects of the mobile development workflow. For instance, while it isn't overly difficult, pushing compiled apps to your Android device via the Google Android SDK tools was tedious. Typically, you'd have the command line open and use ADB to install to our connected device (having to write out the full disk location for your apk file). However, because Flash Builder includes the necessary SDK tools, once you create a run configuration and choose to run or debug on the connected device, you are generally all set. In fact, Flash Builder 4.5 even comes with the Windows device driver that you need to install in order to use USB debugging on your Android phone. It's easy and painless! Nonetheless, there are times when you connect a device and Flash Builder will inform you that it doesn't see the connected device. This post has some ideas that have worked for me and others that I have shared it with in the past. I encourage you to share any devices that have caused you trouble and any specific solutions that have worked for you that I may not cover here.

Another great week of updates this week and I expect things will pick up with the official release of Flex 4.5 and Flash Builder 4.5 imminent and the FITC Toronto conference going on as we speak. While there is tons of great content, some particularly key items this week, in my own opinion, include Greg Wilson's post on convincing skeptical developers about Flex on mobile, not one but two libraries released for runtime bytecode modification in Flash (Mixing Loom and AS3-Mixins) and Jesse Warden's discussion of his Flash Player 11 wishlist (which includes feedback directly from the Flash Player product team in the comments).
