Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 6/24/11
Posted on Jun 24, 2011
This week featured the release of AIR 2.7 which focused in large part on enhancements for AIR on iOS, thus we had quite a few iOS focused posts this week. Between the recent Flex and Flash Builder updates for iOS and Blackberry Tablet OS support and the AIR 2.7 release, I am seeing a lot more about how people are deploying apps across all three major mobile platforms - even sometimes tying in the browser. In addition, there seems to be more of an emerging consensus around best practices for developing with Flash and Flex for these platforms. It's definitely exiting times for Flash, Flex and AIR developers.

One of the features I commonly see requested for Android applications is QR code reader or barcode scanner integration. Some native Android applications actually use an external application for QR code/barcode scanning. That, as far as I know, is not an option at the moment in AIR on Android. However, thanks to the open source ZXing library, some direction from Amer Dababneh and a blog post by Michael B, I was able to create basic sample Flex-based mobile application that accessed the camera and read QR codes. This blog post will show you how.

Amongst all the amazing content from the Flash Platform community there were some items that really stood out to me this week. For example, I think Travis Collins demo of using a two-finger swipe gesture for moving through Flex mobile views is an example of something both cool and useful. The case studies by Terry Paton and Christian Östman on building iOS games using Flash and AIR shows how the platform is rapidly evolving. The fluid Flex skins by Fabien Bizot is a super cool experiment and example of problem solving, even if I'm not certain where I'd actually put it to use. Finally, the video demo by Justin Imhoff showing how he built a means to control Google Street View using Microsoft Kinect and Adobe AIR shows how the Flash Platform fits into newly evolving technologies for user interaction and interfaces.
