Best of JavaScript, HTML & CSS - Week of March 18, 2013

Posted on Mar 25, 2013

There were so many tutorials and releases this week, that I could barely keep up (plus, PAX East delayed me a bit, honestly, which didn't help). A lot of tutorials seemed to focus on neat CSS tricks or cutting-edge features that aren't widely implemented yet, but still worth getting to know. There were a lot of newly released and updated libraries, notably Backbone hit 1.0. Enjoy!

PAX East 2013 - Indie Games Galore

Posted on Mar 24, 2013

Retro ArcadeI have been to every PAX East since the first overstuffed year in the too small Hynes Convention Center. It was always crowded, but this year felt different. That's in part because this year was the first year that, in terms of trying out the latest and greatest triple-A games coming from the big name publishers, it was a total bust. The lines have always been long (heck, I waited an hour and a half to play Lollipop Chainsaw - which was not worth the wait) but this year it was a whole new league. My top priority, to try Bethesda's Elder Scrolls Online was thwarted by a 3+ hour line. My curiosity about The Last of Us was squashed by a 2.5 hour line. These games look cool, but that'd mean the majority of my day would be spent trying a single game by a single publisher.

Thankfully, there are a ton indie game pulishers with booths at the event, making my day on my own and my day with the family both enjoyable. I loved how the landscape of game development seems to be changing because of Kickstarter. I met many developers who'd found the funding they'd needed there. Anyway, below is a summary of what I saw in my two days at PAX East 2013.
