ColdFusion Open-Source Update - February 26
Posted on Feb 26, 2007
Another *very* busy week in ColdFusion open-source with four new projects, three updates and dozens of announcements and tutorials. On a side note, if this level of activity keeps up, I am debating splitting the updates out along the lines of the sections below with the thinking that they may be more manageable for me and that these are often getting so long I think many of the stuff towards the bottom gets lost. If I did that I would probably release one Monday, one Wednesday and one Friday (or something like that). Any thoughts from the readers on that? Would this be helpful, unhelpful or make no difference to you? Anyway, enjoy!
New Releases and Updates
New Project: Katapult
Initial Release
John Mason's project is a simple content management system that saves content as html, xml or cfml (i.e. no database is involved).

Initial Release
This project by Rob Gonda is the SVN abstraction layer that manages RIAForge.og. This is still in early alpha and Rob has informed me that he is still working on a number of improvements and fixes that should be out soon, but since it has been publicly available for several weeks, I wanted to make sure I don't overlook it (hope that is ok Rob).
ColdBox
Luis Majano released a new beta build of his MVC framework which was also updated a couple of time during the week (the latest one being the top item on my list below).

Comments
Brian,
This volume certainly does make for a very long post.
Even so, this post is one of the things I look forward to every week. I think that would still be true if you split it up - but less so.
I generally go to the post to find new projects and updates to existing ones and then like seeing the announcements and tutorials on the same page. I am afraid that if they were split up, I might be less likely to read on one of the other days and miss something good (then again, I would probably read it all however you split it up - I don't know).
Anyway, I really love it all in one handy place every week.

Brian,
I love the Open Source Update. I like it all in one spot as well, but I think your idea to split it into 3 parts has merit.
However, my vote goes to whatever is most likely to keep you at it. =)

Thanks Sammy. Despite my constant bitching, I actually have no plans to give it up just yet.

I like the idea of 3 parts. The volume is getting big so I think it's a good idea to split off the different sections - gives us more to look forward to reading throughout the week.

Hi Brian, I love getting the Open Source Updates and although initially I jumped for the idea of a Monday, Wednesday and Friday update, the more I thought about it, keeping it a regular once a week update makes it more valuable. In my opinion (as has happened to other daily updates I receive) the more frequent the updates, the less special they become and I tend to switch off. On the MXNA, I always go straight for your post and enjoy receiving them. Keep up the great work,
Dan.

I think the all-in-one, once-a-week update is a great format. I think it will lose some of its impact and coherence if you break it up.

Ever consider an open-source podcast?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Looks like the "leave it alone" group has it, which is fine by me, just figured I would float the idea in case the posts were information overkill for some of you.
Glad to hear everyone is reading it closely :)
