ColdFusion Open-Source Update - October 23
Posted on Oct 23, 2006
The biggest new this week was of course the launch of RIAForge, which offers a full set of features and has managed to both draw some existing projects to move there as well as draw out a number of new projects. So, we end up with another week of 5 new projects and 1 new announced project. The growth of new projects has even forced me to have to contemplate what constitutes an open source project and how that affects what goes on the list and the CF community as a whole. In fact, I have already been forced to shorten my commentary/summary on the posts below in order to accommodate all the news (more time-wise than space-wise), which will likely remain the standard going forward unfortunately (although this is good news overall since it is because of the massive growth in the quantity of projects and their activity overall).Speaking of the list, I have added more new features this week as well.
New Project: aedCFC
Initial Release
This project created by Trent Richardson sounds like it handles some scaffolding-like features by automatically building views to add, edit and delete a record.
New Project: JohnnyCache
Initial Release
Andy Powell's new project uses a combination of a component and custom tag to allow you to bypass any business logic processing if the system already contains the cached view. The examples supplied in subversion appear to include use with the Mach ii framework.
New Project: Histogram and Color Histogram Component
Initial Release
Seth Duffey has created a component that will generate black & white and color histograms based upon a supplied image.
New Project: CFGoogleMap
Initial Release
John Blayter released a set of custom tags that when combined offer a kind of API for integrating and creating Google map-based applications.
New Project: AntFarm
Initial Release
AntFarm was created by Russ Johnson as a tool for automatically creating builds from a Subversion repository while cleaning up things like unwanted files.
New Project (Announced): MachBug
New ColdFusion Bug Tracker Announced
Andrew Powell and Russ Brown announced an open source bug tracking software that utilizes Mach II, ColdSpring, Flex 2 and Spry. He also calls for interested participants to contact him.
ColdBox
Version 1.1 Released and New Dashboard Preview
Luis Majano released the latest version of his MVC framework. It has a long list of new features, and fixes. However, what caught my attention the most is the not-yet-released dashboard update which includes update tools and full-fledged application building wizards. Very cool. Luis has also updated the documentation.
ColdFusion Yahoo Package
Update Released
This project by Ray Camden now includes the Geocoding API.
varScoper
1.0 Release
Mike Schierberl has released the 1.0 version of his var scoping checker. It finds all unscoped variables within function and tags, report the line number and outputs this data to the screen or to a CSV file.
Mach II
Head First Mach II Breeze Recording
Peter Farrell presents to the Scottish CFUG.
Flogr
Project Updates Released
Scott Stroz' Flex log reader project was among several to move to RIAForge this week along with a code upgrade.
CFFM
Version 1.14 Released
Rick Root added several new features to his file manager application in the latest maintenance release.
Fusebox
5.1 Development Update
Sean Corfield briefly discusses the current review process of tickets to decide what will be included in the upcoming maintenance release.
Lightwire
LightWire Updates
The "(frighteningly!) prolific" Peter Bell (or fppb for short) has updated his lightweight dependency injection framework which, of particular importance, no longer relies on the use a specially designed base component. Peter also wrote a series of articles on his framework:
AVBlog
AVBlog Updates
Andrea Veggiani has updated his blog software with the latest versions of FCKEditor and TinyMCE as well as integrating Rick Root's CFFM file manager.
Transfer
Moved to RIAForge
Mark Mandel has also moved his project to RIAForge.
Beginner's Tutorial
I wrote a (fairly) lengthy beginners tutorial for integrating Transfer using ColdSpring.
