Music for Your Work Week - Asobi Seksu

After a long hiatus, I have decided to bring back my "Music for Your Work Week" series. They weren't the most widely read posts, but as a music fan, I like writing them. Plus, I download so many albums, perhaps someone will be interested in my occassional "finds."

This week's pick is an album I downloaded from Emusic several months ago, but am always surprised and impressed whenever I listen to it. Citrus by Asobi Seksu (apparently Japanese for "playful sex") is a wonderful and generally upbeat mixture of alternative rock/pop that is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine with more than a dash of the Primitives thrown in.Asobi Seksu do an interesting mixture of vocals, generally by their singer Yuki, sung in both English and Japanese. Much like My Bloody Valentine, they create a wall of lush and melodic noise using guitars with heavy feedback - the feedback almost becoming another instrument. Unlike MBV, and more like the Primitives, Asobi Seksu adds catchy melodies over the top creating songs that are upbeat and danceable.

If you, like me, have an Emusic subscription, you can download the album there. Otherwise, if you fancy DRM, it is also available at iTunes. Enjoy!

P.S. On a completely irrelevant note, I tried writing this post using Buzzword and while it was workable, it wasn't ideal for this specific use. It doesn't seem to have an HTML view (though Google Docs HTML is generally crap) and even simply copy pasting led to extraneous paragraph breaks. Oh well, we'll see how it progresses.

Brian, I like your idea of posting music you listen to at work. I have posted a few entries on my blog about records I'm "in to," but nothing related to what I listen to at the office.

There are a few CF folks who use the last.fm site to post what they listen to as they listen. I've found this a great way to discover new bands I otherwise would not. You should check it out and "friend me" if you do. http://www.last.fm/user/Trajik210/

Lastly, iTunes now has DRM-free music for some of their artists.

Thanks Aaron, I actually signed up for last.fm and am in the CF group I think but I rarely use it (probably because I do most of my music listening at work and I believe it was/is blocked).

I was aware of the DRM free stuff on iTunes. I actually signed up so that it defaults to that when it is available (which is infrequent). At that point it is a price thing. I like iTunes in terms of usability and selection, but I don't buy Apple's anti-DRM stance. I think it is just posturing...but that is a whole other post. Emusic on the other hand is inexpensive, has a great selection (if you aren't looking for Top 40) and is 100% DRM free!

(oh and to be clear I receive nothing from emusic at the moment, so my endorsement is genuine).
