Music for Your Work Week - Sara Valenzuela

So if you have followed any of my music related posts, you may be wondering if I like anything other than "Retro-Electro-Rocktronica" (ok, I made that genre up but I think it works). Well, in fact, I do, and this week's pick is a Latin album from Mexico, Sara Velenzuela's "Lado Este". The review at Itunes makes a comparison to the Cocteau Twins, and while I am a fan, I am not sure that is warranted, but the Sundays comparison fits. I think Ivy may be a better (and more recent comparison). Which leads me to my next point. Many of you may have only been introduced to Latin music by the likes of Ricky Martin or Luis Miguel or Shakira (ok, Shakira is pretty good but that's as far as I'll go). If so, then here, in no particular order, are some Latin albums you should check out that will change your mind about what Latin music (well rock/pop anyway) is about:

Julieta Venegas - "Si"
This is straight latin pop with a Mexican flavor, but it's the best, most upbeat and cathiest stuff you'll hear. Her new album comes out in about two weeks and I cannot wait...the preview song (Me Voy) is excellent.

Los Amigos Invisibles - "The Venezuelan Zinga Son Vol. 1"
This album is filled with awesome grooves and beats that sometimes sounds straight out of the 70's but remains thoroughly modern and distinctly latin.

Ely Guerra - "Lotofire"
Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy is newer and more well known, but Lotofire is far superior IMO. Ely Guerra makes the best latin alt-rock around and this album is their best.

Los Aterciopelados - "Gozo Poderoso"
Electronic latin alt-pop that is cathy, upbeat and very danceable. I haven't been convinced by vocalist Andrea Echeverri's recent solo work but this album is fantastic.
