Music for Your Work Week: Latin Electro-pop

Posted on Aug 29, 2007

As I have mentioned on this semi-regular column before, I love Latin music, just not the stuff you might catch on American Top 40 radio stations. Most of what I like falls under the "Alt-Latin" category but I am also a big fan of the "Electronic" music category and sometimes these two worlds meet nicely. The following are my three favorite electro-pop bands and the respective albums. If you have some favorites of your own in this genre, please feel free to share them in the comments as I would love to hear more. :)Miranda!
Miranda! is a Latin electro-pop band from Argentina and their album Sun Restricciones is filled with catchy tunes with sparse arrangements that work well with lead singer, Juliana Gattas', voice. Particular favorites of mine include "Vuelvo a Ti", "El Profe" and "Tu Guru". They have also just recently released a new album, El Disco de Tu Corazón, which I do not yet own (but will shortly) which even features guest vocals by Julieta Venegas, another one of my favorite Latin artists.

Miranda! is not available on eMusic unfortunately, which means your options are iTunes or Amazon (I got my copy at a brick and mortar retailer, but it isn't usually that easy to find).

Entre Rios
Entre Rios is the most "indie" of the electro-pop bands listed here and also hails from Argentina (the name of the band is actually a region in Argentina). I initially heard of them when Julieta Venagas listed their song "Cerca & Extraña" from their most recent album Onda (2005). That is indeed the best song on the album, but you may also want to check out "Inocencias" and "Sobra".

The nicest part of the deal is that Entre Rios albums are available DRM-free at eMusic if you are a member, but can also be found at iTunes or Amazon.

Belanova
Belanova is from Guadalaraja, Mexico, and their album Dulce Beat is filled with the most infectious, danceable and catchy Latin synth-pop of the groups listed here. They are apparently quite popular and have even been nominated for a Latin Grammy. I am particularly fond of the songs "Niño" and "Escena Final". They appear to have a new album, Fantasía Pop set to be released, with a new single already available, "Baila Mi Corazón".

Unfortunately, this album is not available via Emusic, though the CD is generally found at any retailer, including Amazon, or via iTunes.
