My Barebones CFEclipse Install and Other Eclipse Resources

Posted on Sep 09, 2005

I have been using CFEclipse for quite some time now, probably close to a year at this point. Alot has happened over that time and I have added (too) many plugins and upgrades, many of which I never actually used on a consistent basis. Some things seemed not to work properly on my Eclipse installation, and, anyway, it was feeling unnecessarily bloated. With that in mind, I started a cleanup of my installation and have moved to a more bare essentials plugin installation to make things easier to maintain. I thought it might be useful to cover my setup and also cover the the plugins I have used in the past.So my barebones installation of Eclipse 3.1 and CFEclipse utlizes the Web Standard Tools (which I just pulled using the Eclipse update site). This covers many of the basics like (from the Eclipse site):

  • Server tools, Internet preferences, TCP/IP monitor
  • HTML (fragments), XML, CSS, JavaScript source editors
  • XML/DTD/XSD utilities
  • WSDL/XSD graphical editors, Web service UDDI/WSDL Explorer
  • SQL Query graphical editor
  • Associated natures, builders, validators and EMF models

This handles a large portion of the items I may be editing outside of CFM/CFC pages. However, I decided, in order to consolidate my plugins, to shell out the $19.95 for AFAE by Rob Rohan. It offers syntax highlighting in many file types I will likely never encounter, but many that I do need on occasion but were missing from the WST. Here is the list of AFAE supported languages from the AFAE site:

  • Objective-C
  • Javascript
  • CSS
  • ActionScript
  • VB.NET
  • C#
  • XSLT
  • XML (plist and XSD too)
  • INI
  • XQuery
  • X86 Assembly (NASM & MASM style)
  • Pascal
  • Python
  • Properties
  • AppleScript
  • Perl
  • Ruby
  • Python
  • Bash Shell Script
  • GIF,PNG,JPG
  • C/C++
  • Cobol
  • Makefiles
  • Povray

Rob's recent post also highlighted the addition of MXML support as well as Mach II and Fusebox configuration files.

That's it...not much to it I know. I hope to add a SQL extension soon, but I was never happy with the ones I tested before and so I end up keeping Query Analyzer open much of the time. I am tempted to try Quantum but I have not actually gotten to that yet. I assume that, despite the list of supported databases on the site, it might actually support MSSQL using the JDBC driver...anyone tried that already?

In the past I have also installed many plugins, so here is a list of resources that I have gathered in that regard (some I have actually worked with others not):

ActionScript
AS Development Tool (asdt)
FDT - Development Tool for Flash

ColdFusion Log Files
CF LogViewer

CSS
CSS Editor for Eclipse

Database
DbEdit Plugin for Eclipse
SQLExplorer

File System
Filesystem Plugin

JavaScript
JavaScript Editor PlugIn for Eclipse

REGEX
Regular Expression Tester

XML
XML Buddy

Alot of these can also be accessed through SourceForge's "Total Eclipse Page". Obviously this is an incomplete list, but I thought it might be useful. Hopefully, my new setup will work nicely and I will post about it down the road.
