Cool Stuff with the Flash Platform - 1/25/11

Posted on Jan 25, 2011

While there were some great posts this week, many portions of the Flash community seemed somewhat distracted by some comments, blog posts and Twitter posts surrounding the New Adventures in Web Design conference in Nottingham, England. This led to follow up posts and much heated discussion. Nonetheless, some very cool posts (not surrounding the debate) did come out this week including things like the camera kaleidoscope application for Android (with source code), a Google Analytics ActionScript 3 library, source code to help you start creating Flash games and a new version of the Flint Particle System (to name just a few).

Cool Mobile & Devices Stuff (AIR for Android, AIR on TV, Flash on Android, iPhone etc.)

Keith Casey of PHP Architect posted an interview with Adobe's Christian Cantrell discussing his recent video and blog post showing his iReverse application, written with Adobe Flash, running on 5 different screens including mobile devices and a television.

Android

Barbara Kaskosz and Dan Gries of Flash and Math share their Camera Kaleidoscope application including source code for AIR for Android. The application takes live images streamed from your camera and applies a kaleidoscope effect to them.

Adobe evangelist Mihai Corlan shows how you can use Flex RPC services within an ActionScript mobile project.

Blackberry

Mihai Corlan also shows how you can use Flex RPC services within a BlackBerry Tablet OS project that uses QNX components.

iOS

Adobe evangelist Paul Trani creates a useful FAQ for the current iOS Packager for Flash. If you are currently porting Flash applications to iOS using the packager, this is a post you will want to bookmark.

Cool Flex, Flash Builder & Catalyst Stuff

Adobe's Joan Lafferty tries to continue the tradition of Peter deHaan (who recently left Adobe) by posting a Flex example. In this case, she shows how to find the maximum scroll position of a Spark List.

Cool ActionScript/Flash Stuff

Nick Mihailovski of the Google Analytics API Team posts that Google has released a new ActionScript 3 library for the Analytics API that can be used in both AIR and Flash/Flex projects. The library was built by DENIVIP Media.

Iain Lobb released the source code for a basic Flash game in order to help others get started in Flash game development and potentially enter a game development contest that is part of Stanford University's 2011 Hackathon.

Will Dady shares his 15 favorite ActionScript 3 code snippets that are posted on on Snipplr.com.

Richard Lord released a new version (3.0) of the open source Flint Particle System for Flash. This project allows you to create very cool particle effects and interactions in both 2D and 3D.

David Ortinau shows how to use the Tweetr AS3 library to create a Twitter OAuth application that uses a single access token.

Keith Peters released the MinimalConfigurator that is a set of XML tags and a parser that allow you to create complex layouts with his MinimalComps library. This is similar to using MXML to layout Flex/Flash applications. He also recently updated MinimalComps.

Cool ColdFusion Stuff

Corey Butler shows you how to use ColdFusion with Amazon payments.

Ben Nadel wrote a a ColdFusion component wrapper for the Java Regular Expression Engine to give you access to deeper regular expression support built into Java.

Comments

Jeff Fall great post again. Keep up the good work. I read this stuff everytime it comes out and it gives me good ideas for mobile apps built with flash... :)
