"Forecast Cloudy for Windows Vista" - Wired News
Posted on Aug 16, 2005
Wired news posted an interesting (though brief) article reviewing the beta 1 of Windows Vista. What they found wasn't particularly exciting. While Microsoft is claiming alot more will be added in the next beta release, Wired found the current beta included "a lot of attractive graphical interfaces and new search-engine functions, but, so far, not too much in the way of productivity or security enhancements."Specific to IE 7, they claim that Vista does "very little" to change "IE's security problems and relative lack of features" besides the addition of tabbed browsing.
While they expect improvements in upcoming release, Wired says that Vista ran slowly on their "Athlon XP 2800 processor and 1 GB of DRAM with an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card." It sounded as if much of this was due to the changes to the graphical interface, such as translucent icons (which, pun intended, are merely window dressing). Also, a DVD drive will be required to install Vista.
Lastly, they say that with regard to security, "the beta 1 version of Windows Vista essentially offers the same security functions that Windows XP Service Pack 2 offers."
I have to say that this doesn't offer much to get excited about if you trust Wired's evaluation of the product at this stage. I am no Microsoft hater, but if Vista basically pretty-fies my desktop, it certainly isn't worth the heavy price of upgrading (not to mention the hassle). Here's hoping that beta 2 does in fact present a more compelling upgrade.
